EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

Overall

RATING

The dominance of the BMW 3 Series in the premium compact segment only increases with the introduction of the all-new 2007 Coupe and the astoundingly fast 3.0-liter twin turbocharged engine found in 335i versions.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

Dynamics

RATING

New for 2007, the range-topping 335i's 3.0-liter twin turbo is simply amazing. Handling and brakes sit at the top of the heap for this class. Steering is precise and well weighted, whether cruising cross country on freeways or carving through canyon roads. There is a lot of car here, and it's a blast to drive.

Comfort

RATING

The driving position is highly adjustable, and accommodates tall drivers with ease. The standard seats are comfortable but do not offer as much cornering support as the optional sport seats, which feature aggressive and effective side bolstering. Euro-firm and well damped describes the ride, but the standard run-flat tires and corresponding reinforced sidewalls sometimes feel abrupt over sharp pavement edges.

Function

RATING

Many settings and defaults are driver selectable through a multifunction stalk on the steering column. BMW's controversial iDrive appears only if the navigation option is purchased. Some like it, some do not. Spend some time with iDrive in the showroom before you decide. The stand-alone HVAC controls work well, but the radio isn't intuitive at first glance -unless one has owned BMW's before. The adaptive bi-xenon headlights are class leading, especially in the new Coupe where low-speed cornering lamps supplement the swiveling headlamps. Trunk space is adequate, and the rear seats can do a 60/40 split fold.

Design/Build Quality

RATING

For 2007, a new Coupe has been added alongside the year-old sedan, and itÂ’s a stunner inside and out. As usual, interior fabric, dash and door panel materials and assembly precision are top shelf.

DETAILED PROFILE:

High Performer Steering, handling, and brakes have always been class leading, and with the addition of the twin-turbo powerplant found in the 335i, regular 3 Series performance reaches the level of last year's M3.

Daily Commuter Considering the performance potential, the day-to-day usability and civility of the 3 Series are impressive.

Comfortable When a six-foot two inch test driver doesn't put the seat all the way back, you know a car has space for tall folks. The seats are well shaped and highly adjustable too. Ditto the telescopic steering column. The ride isn't plush, however, as the run-flat tires show their rigidity on certain pavement edges and seams.
